Homeland Health Specialists sets criteria for flu vaccine redistribution
October 15, 2004
Golden Valley, MN --- Homeland Health Specialists has established criteria for the redistribution of its flu vaccine. Homeland Health Specialists received 60 percent of its contracted vaccine supply from Aventis, and as of October 6, had cancelled all its corporate worksite flu shot clinics in response to the national vaccine shortage. The following criteria were setup to reallocate its vaccine supply to meet the needs of Minnesota’s high risk populations.
- Influenza vaccine can only be redistributed to State of Minnesota licensed health care facilities. This may include a range of facilities such as medical clinics, hospitals, long term care facilities and assisted living facilities.
- The health care facility must be referred to Homeland Health Specialists, Inc. by their local county public health department or the Minnesota Department of Health.
- The health care facility must agree to abide by the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control and the Minnesota Department of Health to vaccinate only high risk individuals in the State of Minnesota.
- The health Care facility must agree to promptly contribute surplus influenza vaccine to the Minnesota Department of Health or their local county public health department.
- The facility must agree not to resell influenza vaccine.
Homeland Health Specialists’ clinics that were previously scheduled primarily for the vaccination of high risk population will continue. “We are now scheduling clinics with public health departments across state to meet the needs of high risk groups,” said Marge Kern, CFO and RN. These clinics will be listed on the Minnesota Department of Health web site and advertised by local county public health departments.
New clinics for high risk individual may be scheduled in residential settings such as independent living. These clinics will be referred to Homeland Health Specialists, Inc. by local county public health or the Minnesota Department of Health.
Requests from health plans to schedule influenza clinics for high risk populations in the worksite will be evaluated and will receive lower priority. High risk individual in the worksite will be requested to attend a high risk public health clinic in their county or check with their local clinic for availability of vaccination.
Kern encourages people who believe themselves to be high risk to check with their local clinic to see if their health care provider has vaccine available. If their local provider doesn’t have vaccine, then they should check the Department of Health website for a high risk flu shot clinic in their area. The website (http://www.mdhflu.com) has criteria for who is at high risk and where the high risk clinics are being held throughout the state.
