Homeland Health Specialists partnering with public health officials to redistribute flu vaccine to high risk groups

October 7, 2004

Golden Valley, MN --- Homeland Health Specialists met early October 6 with Minnesota Department of Health officials and Minnesota Commissioner of Health Cal Ludeman, along with representatives from health plans within Minnesota to discuss a plan of action to address the shortage of vaccine supply in Minnesota. Many health care providers in the state are without vaccine. Those who bought primarily from Chiron Corp., the company whose manufacturing plant was shut down this week by the British government.halting shipment of 46 million doses destined for the United States., received no supply. Others received partial shipments. Homeland received half of its supply of vaccine from Adventis, and is unsure if will receive their second scheduled shipment of vaccine from Adventis later in October.

Homeland Health Specialists has cancelled all worksite flu clinics and is reallocating all their flu vaccine to high risk individuals only. Homeland Health Specialists had begun offering high risk flu shot clinics on October 4. “We normally do our high risk clinics first,” said Marge Kern, CFO and RN. “And as of October 6, all worksite health clinics were cancelled. We are now scheduling clinics with public health departments across state to meet the needs of high risk groups.”

Worksite flu shot clinics make up 75 percent of Homeland Health Specialists’ annual revenue. Despite the potential loss of revenue, Kern said Homeland Health Specialists wants to do the right thing for the community. “We are partnering with health plans and public health departments across the state of Minnesota to ensure that no high risk individual is turned away. We looked at how to best distribute our vaccine. If someone died because we didn’t make the vaccine available, how could you live with that?,” Kern said.

Homeland Health Specialists will continue booking high risk flu shot clinics, and will begin offering high risk flu shot clinics as early as October 12. Kern encourages people who believe themselves to be high risk to check with their local clinic to see if their health care provider has vaccine available. If their local provider doesn’t have vaccine, then they should check the Department of Health website for a high risk flu shot clinic in their area. The website (http://www.mdhflu.com) has criteria for who is at high risk and where the high risk clinics are being held throughout the state.
